Yemen

Yemen is known for the mud-brick towers of Sana'a and Shibam and the dragon's blood trees of Socotra, but the UK advises against all travel there.

Yemen sits in the southwest corner of the Arabian Peninsula, with Saudi Arabia to the north, Oman to the east, and coasts on the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. Sana'a's old city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is known for its tall houses built from mud brick. Shibam, a walled town in the Hadhramaut valley, has tall clay houses rising from the desert floor. Socotra, an island in the Indian Ocean, is home to dragon's blood trees and plants that grow nowhere else.

The UK currently advises against all travel to Yemen, so check your government's advice before you plan anything, since it can change at short notice. Sana'a, Shibam and Socotra are far apart, so sort out flights and distances before you set dates. Sana'a sits at high altitude, so its nights are cooler than the lowlands. Each stop needs its own days in your plan, since moving between them takes longer than the map suggests.

Five things to know before Yemen

  1. Read the current travel advisory first

The FCDO advises against all travel to the whole of Yemen because of unpredictable security, and says British nationals already there should leave. UK travel advice

  2. Expect no embassy help on the ground

The British Embassy in Sana'a is closed and its staff withdrawn. The UK cannot arrange evacuations or help with leaving, though nationals can phone the FCDO in London.

  3. Get a visa before you travel

Yemen requires a visa, and the UK points British citizens to the Yemeni embassy in London. Your passport must be valid for 6 months after arrival. Visas and entry

  4. Mind the currency and registration rules

The UK says importing or exporting Yemeni currency is illegal, foreign currency over USD 3,000 must be declared on entry, and stays over 14 days need registration.

  5. Get written confirmation of insurance cover

The FCDO says your policy could be invalidated if you go against its advice. It also warns of flight cancellations and airspace closures across the region. Travel insurance

Before you go to Yemen

Rules for Yemen, checked
Read the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office advice for Yemen before you book, since it states the risk level for each region.
Visa and entry rules for Yemen have changed repeatedly, so confirm them with your embassy or the official government source before you buy flights.
Bring cash in US dollars and Yemeni rials. Card payments and ATMs are unreliable, so plan to pay in cash.
Dress modestly in public, covering shoulders and knees, and ask before photographing people or any checkpoint or military site.
