Phu Quoc Island

Phu Quoc is Vietnam's largest island, with beaches, a northern national park and a marine reserve home to sea turtles and dolphins.

Phu Quoc is a tropical island in the Gulf of Thailand, part of An Giang province in southern Vietnam. It is Vietnam's largest island. The special zone covers about 575 km² and includes the main island plus about 21 smaller islets. Duong Dong, on the west coast, is the largest town and the administrative center. Fast boats and ferries connect the island with Rach Gia and Ha Tien on the mainland.

Beaches are the main attraction. An Thoi bay is small and calm, sheltered by two headlands. The national park in the north covers about 336.57 km². The marine protected area, set up in 2007 at the northern and southern ends of the island, covers about 187 km² of sea home to sea turtles, dolphins and dugongs. The dry season runs from late October to April. From May to early October the southwest monsoon brings humidity of 85 to 90 percent, and temperatures peak near 35 °C in April and May. The island is large, so plan a few nights in one area.
