Hà Tiên is a ward of An Giang province on the Gulf of Thailand, in the far southwest of Vietnam's Mekong Delta, with Cambodia to the north. It lies about 60 km east of Phú Quốc island and 75 km southwest of Châu Đốc. The name is traditionally explained as "fairies on the river": on moonlit nights, boats with coloured flags and music were said to glide between Đông Hồ and Kim Dự, which people took to be fairies gathering. Mạc Cửu, a settler from Guangdong, built up the settlement in the late 1600s, and a citadel at Mỹ Đức, built in 1834, served as the seat of Hà Tiên province.
The sights include Núi Thạch Động, a hill with a cave, Núi Đá Dựng, a rocky hill, and Biển Mũi Nai, a seaside beach area. Tô Châu and Bình Sơn hills and the Giang Thành and Đông Hồ rivers add to the scenery of sea, hills and water. National Route 80 runs through the ward to the international border gate into Cambodia.

Is Ha Tien worth visiting?
As a quiet coast stop on the way to or from Cambodia, yes. It has a calm beach, a cave pagoda and ferries to Phu Quoc, but not enough to fill more than a night or two.
How do you go from Ha Tien to Cambodia?
By land, through the Ha Tien international border gate, which is on the official list for e-visa holders. Check that your visa type and the crossing match, and carry your passport and visa.
How do you get from Ha Tien to Phu Quoc?
By ferry. The tourism board says daily ferries leave from Rach Gia and from Ha Tien, so check current operators and times locally.
What is there to do in Ha Tien?
Visit Mui Nai beach, climb Thach Dong mountain to Tien Son Pagoda, and see Dong Ho swamp and Hang Pagoda. Expect a peaceful town with a Gulf of Thailand coastline.
When is the best time to visit Ha Tien?
The dry months from about December to April are the easiest for beaches and boats. The southwest rains arrive in the middle of the year and can make sea trips less comfortable.
