Washington is the state in the far northwest corner of the contiguous United States, with Oregon to the south, Idaho to the east and the Canadian province of British Columbia to the north. Most trips start in Seattle, the largest city, on Puget Sound. The Cascade Range splits the state into two very different halves: the wetter west, with Seattle, the Olympic Peninsula and the San Juan Islands, and the drier east, where Spokane is the main city.
Summer, roughly July through September, suits mountain trails and island trips best, while fall and winter bring more rain to the west side. A week covers Seattle, a day trip to the San Juan Islands and a few days in Olympic National Park. Add time for the Cascades or Spokane, or plan a longer trip if you want to see both sides of the state.

How many days do you need in Washington?
Four to five days covers Seattle and a ferry trip to the San Juan Islands. Add two nights for Olympic National Park, and a third if you want the Cascades or Spokane.
How do you get from Seattle to the San Juan Islands?
Drive about 1.5 to 2 hours north to Anacortes, then take a Washington State Ferries boat to Friday Harbor. Walk-on passengers can ride without a car.
Do you need a car in Seattle?
Not for the city. Link light rail, buses and walking cover most sights. A car helps for Olympic and the Cascades, where buses run less often.
Is Seattle or Spokane better for a first trip?
Seattle for ferries, food and the waterfront. Spokane is calmer, with Riverfront Park and Spokane Falls, but it is about four hours by car from Seattle.
Can you visit Olympic National Park from Seattle in one day?
It is possible but a long day, with the drive taking several hours each way. Two nights in Port Angeles or Forks gives time for the rain forest and the coast.
When is the best time for the San Juan Islands?
July to September for dry weather and long evenings. Late spring and early fall are quieter, with shorter ferry lines.
