St. Augustine is a historic city on Florida's Atlantic coast, the county seat of St. Johns County and about 40 miles (64 km) south of downtown Jacksonville. Pedro Menéndez de Avilés founded it on 8 September 1565, and it is the oldest settlement of European origin in the contiguous United States that has been lived in without a break. It was the capital of Spanish Florida for over 200 years and later the capital of British East Florida from 1763.

The historic center is best seen on foot. The Castillo de San Marcos, a 17th-century fort built of coquina stone, is the best-known landmark. St. George Street is a pedestrian street lined with more than 30 historic houses and visitor sites. Anastasia State Park lies near the city and has beaches. Spring and autumn highs run from 74°F to 87°F, while summer highs reach the low 90s°F (about 32°C) and the wet season runs from May through October.

St Augustine FAQ

How many days do you need in St Augustine?

One full day covers the fort, the old streets and a harbor walk. Two days let you add a beach afternoon and a slower evening. Three days only make sense with a nearby city.

How much does Castillo de San Marcos cost?

Adults aged 16 and over pay $15, valid for seven consecutive days, and children 15 and under are free with an adult. Passes such as America the Beautiful are honored, so check your pass first.

Is St Augustine walkable?

Yes. The old center is compact and mostly flat, and cars add little. Park once, use walking or the trolleys, and take a rideshare for the beaches at night.

What is the best time to visit St Augustine?

Spring and late fall suit walking the old center. July and August are slow and sticky, and the holiday-lights season fills rooms from late fall through winter, so book those weeks early.

Is St Augustine worth visiting?

Yes for history and a small-town feel, especially with a fort and old streets, and no for big-city nightlife. It works best as one or two nights in a longer Florida or East Coast trip.
