Savannah is a port city on the Savannah River in coastal Georgia. James Oglethorpe laid out its grid of squares in 1733, and many still sit under oak trees, lined with brick and wood houses from the 1800s. River Street follows the old waterfront, where restored cotton warehouses hold shops and restaurants. Most of what draws visitors is walkable from the downtown core.
Plan two or three days if you want to walk, look at old buildings and eat well. Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons; summer brings heavy heat and humidity, with afternoons running hot. Stay in the Historic District so the squares, River Street and restaurants are a short walk away. Walking is the simplest way to get around the historic core. Tybee Island, a beach town a short drive east, fits as a half day or a day trip from the city.
Savannah in five
- Walk the squares before the heatThe Historic District's squares link into walkable loops. Start before 10 am from April to October, and plan a museum or a long lunch for the hottest hours.
- Visit Forsyth Park and the Victorian DistrictForsyth Park anchors the south end with its fountain and oak-lined paths. The Victorian District around it is quieter than River Street and worth an evening stroll.
- Treat River Street as a short stopThe riverfront has cobblestones, shops and ship views, but it is busy and touristy. Walk it once, then eat and drink a few blocks inland where prices and crowds ease.
- Add a beach day at Tybee IslandTybee is Savannah's beach, a short drive east of the Historic District. Go on a weekday in summer, and check weather and tides before you plan a long afternoon.Charleston travel guide
- Book flexible rates for August to OctoberA late-summer storm on the Georgia coast can disrupt flights and tours for days. Choose changeable fares for those months, and read your policy for what it says about named storms.Insurance for the USA

How many days do you need in Savannah?
Two days cover the Historic District, Forsyth Park and a walking tour. Three days let you add Tybee Island or a slower day. Four days work if you fold in Charleston or another coastal town.
Is Savannah worth visiting?
Yes, if you like walkable old streets, shaded squares, historic houses and Southern food. It is less suited to travelers who want big museums or nightlife, and it feels slow in the heat of summer.
What is the best time to visit Savannah?
March to May and October to November are the easy seasons for walking the squares. July and August are hot and humid, and the storm season peaks in late summer, so keep those months for indoor stops.
Do you need a car in Savannah?
Not in the Historic District, where walking works. Rent one for Tybee Island, plantations or a regional road trip, or rely on rideshare for short trips.
Is Savannah better than Charleston?
They are close cousins. Savannah has the squares and a slower pace, Charleston has a denser food scene and harbor views. Many trips use both, with a night or two in each.
