North Carolina sits on the southeastern Atlantic coast of the United States. Its western edge climbs into the Blue Ridge Mountains, and Great Smoky Mountains National Park lies on the border with Tennessee. The eastern side is a line of narrow barrier islands called the Outer Banks, where the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse stands. Between the mountains and the coast is the Piedmont, a region of rolling hills with Raleigh and Charlotte as its main cities.

Most trips combine the mountains, the coast and one or two cities, since the drive from the mountains to the coast takes several hours. Asheville is the base for mountain hiking and for Biltmore Estate, the house built by the Vanderbilt family. Eastern-style pork barbecue is a regional specialty. Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons, and fall brings the strongest color to the mountains. Plan five to seven days to cover the mountains and the coast at a relaxed pace.

    North Carolina FAQ

    Is North Carolina worth visiting?

Yes, if you pair two regions: the Blue Ridge mountains around Asheville and the Outer Banks coast. Add Raleigh or Charlotte for city days and a flight in or out.

How many days do you need in North Carolina?

Five to seven days covers the mountains and the coast at a relaxed pace. Three days fits one region only, so pick the mountains or the coast.

Do I need a car in North Carolina?

For the Outer Banks and the Blue Ridge, yes. Parts of downtown Raleigh and Uptown Charlotte can be walked, but moving between regions by car is far simpler.

Is Asheville or the Outer Banks better for a first trip?

Asheville for mountains, food and the Biltmore Estate; the Outer Banks for beaches and lighthouses. Asheville is about 2 hours by car from Charlotte, and the Outer Banks about 2.5 to 3 hours from Raleigh.

Is Charlotte or Raleigh a better base?

Charlotte for the airport hub and the Uptown skyline; Raleigh for the state capital, its museums and the Research Triangle nearby. The two cities are about 2.5 hours apart by car.
