Asheville is a city in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, where the French Broad and Swannanoa rivers meet. Travelers come for the Biltmore Estate, the mansion George Vanderbilt built in the 1890s just south of downtown, for the artist studios of the River Arts District and for several craft breweries. Downtown is small enough to walk, and the mountains rise close around it.

Three to four days fits the city, a full day at Biltmore and one or two drives on the Blue Ridge Parkway, which runs near the city. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is roughly an hour west by car, enough for a day trip. Spring and fall are the most common times to visit, and October is a common month for fall color. Before you go, check road and park status: Hurricane Helene in 2024 caused major damage across western North Carolina.

When is the best time to visit Asheville?

Late April to May and September to October. October brings fall color and the biggest crowds. Summers are warm and busy, and winters are quiet.

Is the Blue Ridge Parkway open?

Do you need a car in Asheville?

For the Parkway, trailheads and day trips, yes. Downtown and the River Arts District are walkable, with rideshare for the gaps.
