Indianapolis is the capital of Indiana, in the central part of the state. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway hosts the Indy 500 in late May, and that race is the reason many visitors plan a trip here. Downtown is small enough to walk, and the Cultural Trail connects neighborhoods, museums and public spaces with a path for walking and cycling. Massachusetts Avenue, usually called Mass Ave, has restaurants, bars and arts venues within a short walk of downtown hotels. The Children's Museum of Indianapolis ranks among the largest children's museums in the world.

Plan two to three days for the speedway, downtown and one or two museums at a relaxed pace. A long weekend or a sports trip suits the city best, and it fits well on a longer Midwest route. Louisville, Kentucky, is about two hours away by car. Spring and early fall are the most comfortable seasons for walking the trail. Indy 500 weekend draws large crowds, so book rooms early if you plan to attend.
