Fairbanks sits in interior Alaska, where the Chena River meets the Tanana River. The city grew out of a gold-rush settlement and is the state's second-largest city after Anchorage. The University of Alaska Fairbanks, on the north side of town, is known for northern research, and its Museum of the North is open to visitors.
Most trips fall into one of two seasons. From late August to April, the northern lights show on clear, dark nights, and winter temperatures can drop far below zero. Around the June solstice, the sun stays up for about 22 hours a day. Aurora viewing needs darkness, so it is a winter activity. The Dalton Highway runs north from Fairbanks toward the Arctic Ocean, and Denali National Park lies to the south. Three to four nights suits a first visit built around the aurora or the midnight sun. Add nights if you plan to drive north or visit the park.
Fairbanks in five
- Come for the aurora from late August to AprilThe lights need dark skies, so the season starts when nights return in late August and runs to April. Clear weather matters more than any one month; stay at least three nights to allow for cloud.
- Rent or borrow cold-weather gear in winterJanuary highs sit around -18°C and nights are colder. Ask your lodge or tour operator what gear they supply before you buy insulated boots and layers you will use for one week.
- Rent a car for summerSummer sights spread out: Denali is about 2 hours south, Chena Hot Springs about an hour east. Cars sell out in June and July. Check your rental contract before any gravel road, since many ban the Dalton Highway.Getting around the USA
- Check the train before you drive to DenaliThe Alaska Railroad links Fairbanks, Denali and Anchorage on a seasonal summer schedule. It saves a long drive but is not daily year-round, so confirm dates before you plan around it.Denali National Park
- Arrive with an approved ESTAVisitors from visa-waiver countries need an approved ESTA before boarding. Alaska has no separate entry rule, so the same authorization covers Fairbanks.ESTA explained

When is the best time to see the northern lights in Fairbanks?
From late August to April, on clear dark nights. February and March often bring clearer skies than midwinter. Plan three or more nights, since cloud can hide the sky for a night or two.
How many nights do you need in Fairbanks?
Three nights for the aurora, so you have several tries. For a summer stop, two nights covers the town and a day trip to Chena Hot Springs or Denali, and a third gives you a rest day.
Is Fairbanks worth visiting in summer?
Yes, for long daylight around the June solstice, river trips and the drive to Denali. It is quiet for city sights, so treat it as a base for the interior rather than a destination on its own.
Can you drive from Fairbanks to Denali?
Yes. It is about 2 hours south on the George Parks Highway, or you can ride the Alaska Railroad in summer. Inside Denali, private cars can drive only part of the park road, so check the park's rules.
Do you need a car in Fairbanks?
In summer, yes, for Denali and the interior. In winter, many visitors skip the car and use aurora tour pickups from their hotel, which also avoids driving on icy roads in the dark.
