Anchorage is Alaska's most populous city, on the Cook Inlet in Southcentral Alaska. Officially it is the Municipality of Anchorage, and it sits on a peninsula between Knik Arm to the north and Turnagain Arm to the south. Turnagain Arm has some of the world's highest tides. Most of the municipality is wilderness, and most residents live in the Anchorage Bowl, the urban core at the head of the inlet.
The city is a base for trips south and north. From Anchorage you can drive to fishing spots on the Kenai Peninsula, or to Denali National Park and Fairbanks. Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport lies about 6 miles south of downtown and is the state's airline hub. Plan for very long summer days and very short, often cloudy winter days, with most precipitation falling in late summer. The Anchorage Museum and the Alaska Native Heritage Center are good places to start on the region's history. The Dena'ina Athabaskan peoples were the area's traditional inhabitants.

Rules for Anchorage, checked
- Check your US entry requirements on travel.state.gov before you fly to Anchorage.Source
- Keep food secured and stay alert on trails. Black bears and grizzlies live in the area and are regularly seen within the city.
- Stay off the coastal mudflats. Extreme tides and fine glacial silt have trapped visitors there, including in 1961 and 1988.
- Give moose space on city trails. They are common, and moose have charged cross-country skiers and dog mushers.

How many days do you need in Anchorage?
Two days cover the city, the Coastal Trail and a museum. Add three to five days for Seward, Denali or a Kenai Peninsula loop.
When is the best time to visit Anchorage?
June to August for long daylight, wildlife and open roads. September has fall color and early aurora. December to March suits winter sports and northern lights.
Do you need a car in Anchorage?
Not downtown, but you will want one or a tour for anything beyond. The Alaska Railroad covers Denali and Seward in season.
Can you see the northern lights in Anchorage?
Sometimes, from September to April, but city light reduces the show. Drive north or up into the mountains on a clear night with a strong forecast.
Is Anchorage worth visiting?
As a gateway, yes. It has a good museum, trails and food, but the highlights are the mountains, glaciers and wildlife an hour or more outside the city.
