The UAE’s story through its galleries

    Zayed National Museum

Zayed National Museum explores the history and culture of the United Arab Emirates, with a particular focus on the life and legacy of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the country’s founding father. Exhibits connect his story with the formation of the UAE and the values associated with his leadership.

Interactive screens, films, photographs and historical objects bring the material together. The presentation moves beyond a display of artefacts, using storytelling to guide visitors through the country’s past and development. Themes include culture, nature and the achievements of the UAE.

The museum also places the Emirates within a wider regional context. Its exhibitions address the country’s connections with the Middle East and the wider world, alongside the natural and human history of the UAE.

Archaeological displays give visitors a glimpse of the region’s earlier history. Ancient sailing ships are among the exhibition highlights, alongside material that traces the UAE’s history from its earlier roots and trade routes to the modern union.

A central thread is Sheikh Zayed’s influence on the country. Photographs, films and personal belongings help tell his story, while other displays explore the history, culture and geography of the Emirates. The exhibitions also address subjects such as conservation, the environment and sustainability, connecting the nation’s heritage with its natural surroundings.

The galleries are designed to be engaging for a range of ages, with interactive elements that make the stories easier to follow. Families can visit, and the museum has facilities for children, including changing tables.

    Falcon-inspired architecture

The museum was designed by Foster + Partners. Its most distinctive exterior detail is a set of tall, slanting structures shaped to evoke a falcon’s feathered wings. Falconry has a long connection with Bedouin life and is a much-loved sport in the UAE, giving the building’s form a specific cultural reference.

Inside, curved walls and skylights shape the gallery spaces, with natural light filtering into the building. The architecture is part of the visit: it echoes the museum’s focus on Emirati identity while providing a contemporary setting for the exhibitions.

The free viewing platform offers another way to look closely at the design and see the building from above. If you want to explore more than the galleries, leave time to visit it during your museum stop.

    Planning your visit

The museum is on Al Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi’s Cultural District. On-site parking is available, including free parking, and the entrance, restrooms and parking facilities are wheelchair accessible. A restaurant is also on site, so you can take a break without leaving the museum.

Plan for two to three hours if you want time for the exhibitions and the viewing platform. Buggies are available for easier movement around the museum. Tickets can be booked in advance, which the museum recommends.
