    Cultural Foundation Abu Dhabi

Visit Abu Dhabi’s Cultural Foundation for changing art exhibitions, a children’s library designed like a pop-up book and a programme of performances.

Near Qasr Al Hosn in Abu Dhabi, the Cultural Foundation brings together art exhibitions, workshops, performances and a children’s library. Its architecture combines modern design with Islamic styles and local details, so the building itself is part of the visit. The Cultural Foundation opened in 1981, following a vision for a modern institution that would support culture and Emirati society. It became a venue for exhibitions, screenings, book fairs and performances, as well as activities for children. After an extensive renovation, it reopened to the public in 2018 with exhibition, workshop and event programmes.

Its work brings together visual and performing arts, learning and community events. Exhibitions can include contributions from artists, curators and collectives in the UAE. The programme also includes heritage workshops, lectures, films and music, so check what is scheduled for your dates rather than assuming every activity is on year-round.

The galleries host changing exhibitions, including work connected to modern and contemporary art from the UAE and the wider Gulf region. The building’s design is also a reason to look around: its architecture combines modern and Islamic styles, with local details and mosaic tilework on the exterior and inside.

Performances take place in the Cultural Foundation’s 900-seat theatre, with programming that has included music, theatre, dance and film. Events can also use the spacious courtyard. Workshops cover different forms of making, including painting, photography, jewelry, ceramics and sculpture. Some activities are free drop-ins, while workshops with professional artists have been listed at around 100 AED. Check the current programme for details and booking arrangements.

    The Abu Dhabi Children’s Library

The Abu Dhabi Children’s Library occupies a three-storey, 5,250-square-metre space within the Cultural Foundation. Its design takes the form of a life-size pop-up book, giving families a distinct place to explore alongside the galleries and events. Children’s activities have included arts and crafts and introductory music sessions.

The library makes the venue a useful stop for families as well as visitors focused on exhibitions. Its programme and activities can change, so consult the Cultural Foundation’s app or website before your visit. The Cultural Foundation is beside Qasr Al Hosn, making it possible to include both cultural sites in a visit to this part of Abu Dhabi.
