A collection rooted in Ukrainian ethnography

The museum grew from Ivan Honchar’s private ethnographic collection into a museum of national significance. Honchar researched and promoted the artistic heritage of the Ukrainian people. His work included 18 volumes of paintings depicting people of his era, from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, in regional clothing and often against rural backgrounds.

The museum’s collection contains more than 27,000 items of traditional folk art. Paintings and sculptures sit alongside clothing, dishes and ancient musical instruments, giving visitors several ways to explore the traditions represented here.
