Asiyan Museum

Visit Aşiyan Museum in Istanbul, Tevfik Fikret’s former home, to see period rooms and his garden grave with views over the Bosphorus.

Aşiyan Museum occupies the former home of Turkish poet Tevfik Fikret in Istanbul’s Bebek neighborhood, above the Bosphorus. The house preserves its early 20th-century furnishings and photographs, offering a look at domestic and literary life in the period. Inside, see the hall where Fikret received guests and the painting “Sis”; the garden holds his grave and gives views across the water. The uphill approach takes effort, but the setting combines a literary collection with a quiet garden overlooking the strait.

Tevfik Fikret lived in this house from 1906 to 1915. He designed the mansion himself and named it Aşiyan, a word meaning “nest” in Persian. Istanbul’s municipal authorities acquired the property from his wife in 1940, and it opened to the public as a literature museum in 1945.

The collection preserves the house as it was arranged during Fikret’s lifetime. Its furnishings and photographs give a sense of the home’s early 20th-century setting and the poet’s life there.

The mansion has three floors, with two wooden levels above a masonry ground floor. Fikret received guests in the entrance hall, where a domed ceiling and painted decorations draw attention. The painting “Sis,” made by Abdülmecit Efendi under the influence of Fikret’s poem, is another work to look for.

The displays also include belongings associated with poet Nigar Hanım and writer Abdülhak Hamit. Fikret’s remains were moved from Eyüp Cemetery to the garden in 1961, after which the museum took the name Aşiyan Museum. The grounds look out over the Bosphorus.
