ETA required. US passport holders apply for an Australian ETA in the app before flying.

Australia has no visa-free entry. The Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601) is applied for in the Australian ETA app, from outside Australia. In most cases the result comes immediately, but Home Affairs suggests you do not make travel arrangements until the ETA is granted. The US State Department's Australia page asks for a passport valid at entry with 1 blank page per stamp.
