Lomé is Togo's capital and largest city, a port on the Gulf of Guinea in the southwest of the country. The city is Togo's administrative hub, its industrial base and its main port. The Ghanaian town of Aflao sits just across the border, a few hundred meters west of the city center. Lomé grew from an Ewe trading place in the 19th century.
Key sights include the Grand Market, where Nana Benz traders sell wrap cloths on the first floor, and the Sacred Heart Cathedral, a German neo-Gothic church from 1904. The Hôtel du 2 Février, a 36-floor concrete and glass tower, is Togo's tallest building. The Togo National Museum shows jewelry, musical instruments and traditional arts. Two or three days cover the center, the market and the museum, and a day trip to Aného fits in. Average daytime highs are about 30 °C, and sea breezes make the heat easier. The dry harmattan wind blows from about December to February or March and can cool mornings to about 19 °C.
