Togo

A narrow West African country where you can go from Lomé's Gulf of Guinea beaches to Atakora hills and dry northern savanna in one trip.

Togo is a small, narrow country on the Gulf of Guinea in West Africa. Ghana lies to its west, Benin to its east and Burkina Faso to its north. Lomé, the capital, is on a coast of sandy beaches and lagoons about 56 km long. Head north and the land changes: central hills, the Atakora mountains across the middle, then dry savanna plains. Mont Agou, at 986 meters, is the highest point.

The country runs about 600 km north from the coast, so a single trip can take in beaches, hill country and savanna. Intercity travel is mostly by road, since passenger trains have been reported suspended since the late 1990s. Adélé villages near Blitta are known for round, windowless houses with thatched roofs. The seasons differ by region: Lomé is coolest from November to February, while the north's dry season runs November to March.

Five things to know before Togo

  1. Check the visa rule for your passport

Entry rules depend on your passport. Check with the Togolese embassy or consulate for your country before you book flights. Visas and entry

  2. Choose Moov Africa or Yas for mobile data

Mobile networks include Moov Africa Togo and Yas Togo. Togo is reported to have some of the better mobile internet quality in West Africa. Phones and eSIM

  3. Plan intercity trips by road, not rail

Passenger trains have been reported suspended since the late 1990s, and the lines now carry mainly freight. Zémidjan motorcycle taxis, shared taxi-brousse minibuses and Sotral city buses are the everyday options. Getting around

  4. Visit Togoville on Lake Togo, east of Lomé

Togoville was a former German colonial town and the first capital. The 1884 treaty with King Mlapa III was signed there.

  5. Use Lomé for most flights, not Niamtougou

Niamtougou International Airport serves the north but is used mainly for military and government flights, so commercial options are limited. The main international airport is Lomé-Tokoin, northeast of the city centre.
