Tanzania

Tanzania is an East African country known for the Serengeti migration, Africa's highest mountain and the Zanzibar archipelago.

Tanzania is an East African country on the Indian Ocean, in the African Great Lakes region. Its full name is the United Republic of Tanzania. Dodoma is the capital, and Dar es Salaam is the largest city, the main port and the commercial centre. Mount Kilimanjaro, at 5,895 m, is Africa's highest mountain and rises in the north-east. The Serengeti plain hosts a yearly migration of white-bearded wildebeest, zebra and other antelopes.

Most visitors go to Zanzibar or the northern safari circuit, which includes Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Lake Manyara and Kilimanjaro. The Zanzibar archipelago lies just off the hot, humid eastern coast, and its Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The north has long rains from March to May and short rains from October to December, so June to September is the usual window for dry-season game viewing. Two weeks gives time for a safari and a few days on the islands.

Five things to know before Tanzania

  1. Apply for the e-Visa before you fly

Most Western visitors need a tourist visa. Apply for the e-Visa on the official immigration portal before you fly; visas on arrival exist at main entry points. Check the fee for your passport on the portal. Tanzania e-Visa

  2. Buy Zanzibar's mandatory travel insurance

All visitors to Zanzibar must buy inbound insurance from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation. Other policies are not accepted, and entry can be refused without it. Zanzibar

  3. Leave plastic bags at home

Tanzania bans plastic bags, and you may be asked to hand them over when you land. Zip-lock bags for toiletries are allowed. UK travel advice

  4. Time the Serengeti for the migration

Calving in the southern Serengeti peaks around January to February, and river crossings in the north usually run from about July to October. Serengeti

  5. Cover shoulders and knees in Zanzibar towns

Zanzibar's authorities can fine visitors $700 or more for clothing they consider inappropriate in public. Keep beachwear for the beach.

Tanzania FAQ

Do I need a visa for Tanzania?

Yes, for most Western passports. Apply for the e-Visa on the official immigration portal before travel, or get a visa on arrival at main entry points. Check the fee for your passport on the portal.

When is the best time to visit Tanzania?

June to October is dry and best for safaris, with river crossings in the northern Serengeti. January and February are good for calving in the south; April and May bring the long rains.

Do I need special insurance for Zanzibar?

Yes. Zanzibar requires inbound travel insurance from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation for all visitors, and other policies are not accepted for entry.

How many days do I need for a Tanzania safari?

Five to seven days covers Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti from Arusha. Add four or five days on Zanzibar to finish at the beach.

How long does it take to climb Kilimanjaro?

Most routes take six to eight days. Longer routes give more time to acclimatize and have higher summit success rates.

Do I need cash on safari in Tanzania?

Park fees are usually included in safari prices, but carry US dollars in newer notes for tips and extras. Cards work in larger lodges and in Arusha.
