Tajikistan

Tajikistan is a mountain country in Central Asia, known for the Pamir Highway and high lakes such as Karakul and Iskanderkul. It suits travelers who want long drives and high passes.

Tajikistan is a landlocked country in Central Asia, bordered by Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, China and Afghanistan. Mountains cover more than 90% of the territory, and most of it lies above 3,000 meters. The capital, Dushanbe, has over 1.2 million people and sits on the southern slopes above the Kofarnihon valley. It is also the country's main air hub.

Visitors go for the Pamir range in the east, the Pamir Highway through Gorno-Badakhshan, and lakes such as Karakul, Sarez and Iskanderkul. The trip suits people who prefer long drives, high passes and small villages to city sightseeing. Spring and autumn are the best seasons. Summer in the lowlands can exceed 40°C, and winter in the Pamir is very cold. Many mountain roads are narrow and affected by weather, so allow more time than the map suggests. Russian is widely understood, and Tajik is written in Cyrillic.

Five things to know before Tajikistan

  1. Apply for the e-Visa unless your passport is visa-free

Some passports, including Canadian, can stay up to 30 days visa-free, but British citizens need a visa. The UK advises allowing at least two weeks for the official e-Visa. Check your own passport on the e-Visa site. Tajikistan e-Visa

  2. Get the GBAO permit for the Pamirs

Travel in Gorno-Badakhshan, including the Pamir Highway and the Wakhan Valley, needs a separate GBAO permit on top of a visa or visa-free entry. Apply through a Tajik embassy before you travel, or the consular department once in Tajikistan.

  3. Drive the Pamir Highway between June and September

High passes such as the Ak-Baital, over 4,600 m, can be blocked by snow outside summer. Most people travel by hired 4x4 with a driver, with homestays along the way.

  4. Stay on roads near the Afghan border

The UK warns of minefields and armed clashes near the Afghan border, and of unrest risk in Gorno-Badakhshan. Avoid off-road walks there and read the current advice before you go. UK travel advice

  5. Carry cash somoni and some US dollars

ATMs are rare outside Dushanbe and Khorog, and homestays and drivers are paid in cash. Clean US dollar notes are easy to exchange. Money on the road

Tajikistan FAQ

Do I need a visa for Tajikistan?

It depends on your passport. Canadians can stay up to 30 days visa-free, while British citizens need a visa, usually the official e-Visa. Check yours on the e-Visa site. The Pamirs also need a separate GBAO permit.

What is the GBAO permit?

A permit for the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, which covers the Pamir Highway, Khorog and the Wakhan Valley. Apply through a Tajik embassy before you travel, or through the consular department once you are in Tajikistan.

When can I drive the Pamir Highway?

June to September is the reliable window. Snow can close high passes from about October to May, and spring melt can wash out roads.

How long does the Pamir Highway take?

Allow at least a week from Dushanbe to Osh in Kyrgyzstan, and ten days or more with the Wakhan Valley. Road conditions, not distance, set the pace.

Is altitude a problem on the Pamir Highway?

It can be. The road climbs above 4,000 m and Murghab sits at about 3,600 m. Go up gradually and spend a night lower down, such as in the Wakhan, before the high plateau.
