Dushanbe is the capital and largest city of Tajikistan, in Central Asia, and its main scientific, cultural, political and economic centre. It sits in the Hisar Valley at about 750 to 930 meters above sea level, with the Hisar Range to the north and east. The Varzob river runs through the city from north to south. Rudaki Park, from the mid-1930s, and Victory Park, from 1975, are among its best-known parks. The city's name means Monday in Tajik and Persian, after a weekly Monday bazaar.

Key sights include the National Museum of Tajikistan, the Ismaili Centre and Rudaki Avenue, the main street. Teahouses, called chaykhanas, are a central part of local social life. Dushanbe has fewer historic sites than other Tajik destinations, so it works well as a base for day trips. Day trips go to the Varzob gorge, with its resorts and thermal springs, and to the Nurek Dam, about 90 km south-east. The best season is June to October, the dry season. Plan two or three days.
