    Syria

Travelers come to Syria for Damascus and Aleppo, among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, and for the desert ruins of Palmyra.

Syria lies on the eastern Mediterranean, bordered by Turkey, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan and Iraq. Damascus and Aleppo are among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, and their old quarters, markets and mosques draw most visitors. Palmyra, in the desert northeast of Homs, has the ruins of a historic trading city. Krak des Chevaliers, a Crusader castle near Homs, is among the best-known monuments. Latakia is the country's main Mediterranean port.

Most trips here center on old cities, museums and ruins, and most sites take a good part of the day, so plan a slow pace. Spring and autumn are the milder seasons for walking. Two or three cities fit into a week. Check the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office advice on Syria before you set any dates, and confirm your visa with the Syrian embassy or consulate in your country.

Five things to know before Syria

    1. Read the current travel advisory first

The UK FCDO advises against all travel to Syria because of unpredictable security and the terrorism threat. Check your own government's advice too, and again just before any departure. UK travel advice

    2. Know that consular help is not available

The UK says consular support is not available from within Syria. British nationals in difficulty can only phone the FCDO in London, so plan your own way out.

    3. Get an e-visa before you travel

Syria requires a visa, and the UK says the e-visa takes about five to seven days. Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after arrival. Visas and entry

    4. Check your passport for Israel stamps

The UK warns that evidence of earlier travel to Israel in your passport may lead to refusal of entry. Israeli and Iranian citizens cannot enter.

    5. Get written confirmation of any insurance

The UK says your policy could be invalidated if you travel against FCDO advice. Ask any specialist insurer to confirm medical and evacuation cover in writing. Travel insurance

    Syria FAQ

Is it safe to travel to Syria right now?

The UK FCDO advises against all travel to Syria. Read your own government's current advice, and note that the UK says consular support is not available from within the country.

Can I get a visa for Syria online?

The UK says visitors need a visa and points to an e-visa system with about five to seven days of processing. Use only the official government site, not an agent, and allow for delays.

Will an Israel stamp stop me entering Syria?

It can. The UK says earlier travel to Israel shown in your passport may lead to refusal of entry, and Israeli and Iranian citizens cannot enter at all.

    Does travel insurance cover Syria?

Usually not. The UK says a policy could be invalidated if you go against FCDO advice, so any specialist cover for medical care and evacuation needs to be confirmed in writing.

Why does this page not list places to visit in Syria?

Because of the all-travel warning, this guide stays limited to entry and safety basics. Damascus, Aleppo and Palmyra are named here only as places on the map until the UK advice changes.
