Vevey is a town on the north-east shore of Lake Geneva in the canton of Vaud, about 18 km south-east of Lausanne and 6 km north-west of Montreux. It is the world headquarters of Nestlé, and it has been a major Swiss chocolate centre since the 18th century. Charlie Chaplin lived in the area from 1952 until his death in 1977. A statue of him in one of his famous poses stands on the lakefront.
The Grande Place is the main square, and La Grenette, a former granary, is its landmark. The lakefront promenade runs toward Montreux, and the Alimentarium food museum opened in 1985. Vevey sits within the Lavaux vineyard region, and local wine is a major part of its culture. Summer is the busiest season, and folk markets run on Saturdays from the second week of July to the end of August. The town sits close enough to Lausanne and Montreux for a day trip by train.

Is Vevey worth visiting?
Yes, as a half or full day for the lakefront, the Alimentarium and Chaplin's World, or as a calmer base than Montreux. It is not a place for big sights, so pair it with Lavaux or Chillon.
How do you get to Chaplin's World from Vevey?
Take bus 212 from Vevey SBB station to the Chaplin stop, about 15 minutes. You can also walk, a climb of 107 m taking around thirty minutes, or drive to the on-site car park.
Is the Alimentarium open on Mondays?
No. The museum's site lists Tuesday to Sunday opening, 10:00 to 17:00 from October to March and 10:00 to 18:00 from April to September.
When is the Vevey market?
Switzerland Tourism lists the Grande Place market on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Check the town's site for holiday changes and for special markets.
Should you stay in Vevey or Montreux?
Vevey for a calmer, market-town base within walking distance of the lake. Montreux for more hotels, the GoldenPass trains and Chillon. The two are one short ride apart.
