Basseterre

Basseterre

Basseterre is a small capital with a walkable waterfront, a historic square and a relaxed pace. It makes a good first stop before you head out to the island's beaches.

Basseterre is the capital and largest town of St Kitts and Nevis, a two-island country in the Leeward Islands of the Eastern Caribbean. The town sits on the coast of St Kitts, the larger island, and its harbor is a regular stop for cruise ships. Most of the town center is easy to cover on foot. Independence Square is the place to start, with historic buildings around its green lawns, and the streets nearby hold shops, churches and small restaurants.

Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a short drive from town and suits a half-day trip for history visitors. Mount Liamuiga, a dormant volcano, and the island's beaches are also reached by road from here. Basseterre suits a short stop: a day in town, a visit to the fortress and a few days on the island. The dry season, roughly December through April, is the usual time to visit. Plan at least two nights if you want to see more than the town.

    Basseterre FAQ

How many days do you need in Basseterre?

One to two days cover the waterfront, Independence Square and Brimstone Hill. Add a day if you want a beach or a ferry trip to Nevis.

    Is Basseterre worth visiting?

Yes, as a base or as a stop on a cruise day. The town is small and quiet, with the fortress as the main sight, so it suits slow trips more than nightlife.

Where should I stay in Basseterre?

Stay in town if you want to walk and catch early ferries. Stay on the beach side if you plan to swim every day. A rental car makes both choices easy.

What currency is used in Basseterre?

The East Caribbean dollar (XCD). US dollars are widely accepted, but change is often given in EC notes, so keep some of each.

Do I need a car in Basseterre?

Not inside town. For Brimstone Hill or the beaches, take a taxi or hire a car, and remember to drive on the left.

Can you visit Basseterre on a cruise day?

Yes. The waterfront and the center are close to the port, so a short walk covers the first sights. Brimstone Hill needs a taxi, so book it as a separate trip.
