Anuradhapura is an ancient city in the north central dry zone of Sri Lanka. It was the royal seat for more than a thousand years, and its ruins are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Sacred City holds the main Buddhist monuments: the Sri Maha Bodhi, a fig tree said to descend from the tree under which the Buddha reached enlightenment, and large brick stupas including Ruwanwelisaya, Thuparamaya and Abhayagiri. Old reservoirs, called wewa, lie between them.
Visitors come for history, religion, or both. The Sri Maha Bodhi is still an active pilgrimage site, so dress modestly and expect devotees and monks. The ruins cover a wide area, and walking between monuments in the heat is slow, so bicycles, tuk-tuks and hired drivers are the usual way to get around. Plan at least one full day, and two if you want the outlying monasteries. May to September is the drier season and the easier time to walk the site.
Anuradhapura in five
- Anuradhapura has its own CCF ticketThe CCF lists USD 30 for a foreign adult and USD 15 for ages 6 to 12. The Sigiriya guide explains how eTickets and counters work, so read it before paying a reseller. How the CCF eTicket works
- Skip the museum until it reopensThe Department of Archaeology says the Anuradhapura Archaeological Museum is temporarily closed for urgent maintenance, with the reopening date still to be announced (notice dated 28 August 2026).Department of Archaeology notice
- Treat it as a living pilgrimage siteThe CCF says Anuradhapura remains a religious center that draws thousands of pilgrims, so dress and behave as you would in a place of worship, and keep your voice low near the Sri Maha Bodhi.UK travel advice
- Start with the Bodhi tree and the big stupasThe CCF names the Sri Maha Bodhi, the Ruwanwelisaya, Jetavanaramaya and Abhayagiriya stupas and the Twin Ponds as the landmarks. Group them by area to save time in the heat.
- Plan the next leg north or southAnuradhapura sits between the ancient cities and Jaffna. Check Sri Lanka Railways or your driver for the current route north, and read the FCDO regional note before you commit.Jaffna travel guide

Is Anuradhapura worth visiting?
Yes, especially for the Sri Maha Bodhi and the stupas. UNESCO says the city flourished for 1,300 years as a political and religious capital and grew around a cutting of the Buddha's fig tree. It is far from the south coast, so give it a night.
How many days do you need in Anuradhapura?
One full day covers the main sacred area and a few ruins by driver or tuk-tuk, and two days lets you slow down. The CCF ticket is single-entry on the day, so pace the route to fit one visit.
Anuradhapura or Polonnaruwa: which first?
If you have time for one, choose by taste: Anuradhapura for living pilgrimage and monumental stupas, Polonnaruwa for brick shrines and carved Buddhas. Both carry the same foreign-visitor ticket price on the CCF list.
Is the Anuradhapura Museum open?
Not at the moment. The Department of Archaeology posted on 28 August 2026 that the museum is temporarily closed for urgent maintenance and that a reopening date will follow on its website. Check that page before you plan around it.
Can you visit Anuradhapura from Sigiriya in a day?
It is possible by road but long, and it leaves little time on site. Most travelers sleep in Anuradhapura for a full day there, or fit it between Sigiriya and the road north to Jaffna.
