Jardins del Real

Explore Valencia’s Jardins del Real, or Viveros, for parrots, a labelled rose garden, fountains and broad shaded paths in a historic public park.

Jardins del Real, also called Viveros, is a large public garden in northern Valencia, on C/ del General Elio. Its broad paths pass mature palms, orange trees, fountains, sculptures, ponds and a rose garden with labels explaining the varieties. Look for the aviaries with colorful parrots, and the small hills formed from rubble of the former Royal Palace. Families will find playgrounds, while the lawns and benches suit a slower walk or picnic. A cafe inside serves drinks and small bites.

A garden with a royal past

Jardins del Real

Jardins del Real is also known as Jardín de Viveros, or Los Viveros. The name Viveros comes from “huerta de Vivel,” a term linked to a lagoon or nursery that supplied irrigation water. During Valencia’s Muslim era, orchards occupied this area. In later centuries they became part of the grounds of a Renaissance palace, the Palau del Real, which gave the gardens their other name.

The palace stood here until 1810. Two small hills in the gardens were made from its rubble. They are often used as a spot for photographs and are known as the Hills of Elio, after General Elio. The gardens reach towards the Turia riverbed and remain a place for walking among trees and open green space.

Paths, flowers and birds

The paths lead through distinct garden areas, with palms, orange trees, olives, baobabs and other plant species. Fountains, ponds and sculptures provide points of interest along a walk. The rose garden has signs identifying its varieties; even when few flowers are in bloom, its layout is worth seeing.

Two aviaries hold colorful parrots. Peacocks also roam around the grounds, and ponds attract birds. For a quieter pause, take a bench or picnic blanket to one of the green areas. The wide, flat paths work well for an easy stroll.

A family visit

Children can use the playgrounds, swings and slides. A small traffic park is laid out like a miniature town, with intersections, traffic lights and crosswalks where children can practise road safety on bikes or pedal go-karts. There is also a skating area for beginners.

The gardens have a cafe serving drinks and small bites, along with public toilets. The Natural Science Museum of Valencia is also located in the gardens; its exhibitions cover subjects including the origin of life, with permanent and temporary displays.
