Segovia

Segovia is a walled Castilian hill town where a Roman aqueduct still stands over the square at the foot of the old town, and a castle sits on a rocky point above two rivers.

Segovia is a walled city in Castilla y León, in north-central Spain, about 30 minutes from Madrid by fast train. The old town sits on a granite spur between the Eresma and Clamores rivers and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its best-known sight is the Roman aqueduct, built from granite blocks without mortar and still standing over the Plaza del Azoguejo at the foot of the old town. From there, the streets climb toward the Gothic cathedral and the Alcázar at the western tip of the rock.

Travelers come for the Alcázar, the cathedral and cochinillo, the roast suckling pig the city is known for. It works as a day trip from Madrid or as an overnight stay, which gives you the old streets in the evening. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, since summers are hot and winters are cold. Plan at least a full day to see the main sights at a steady pace.

Segovia in five

  1. Take the fast train, then a city busSegovia-Guiomar station is a few kilometers outside the old town, so allow time for a bus or taxi after the roughly 30-minute ride from Madrid Chamartín. Check the return time before you leave town.Madrid
  2. See the aqueduct free, pay for interiors selectivelyThe Roman aqueduct runs through the old town and costs nothing to view. The Alcázar and the cathedral tower charge entry, so pick one interior if time is short and check hours on the official sites.
  3. Eat cochinillo at lunchRoast suckling pig is Segovia's signature dish and many restaurants carve it at the table. Check portions on the menu before you sit down, since a whole-pig set is made for two or more.
  4. Skip a rail pass for this hopMadrid to Segovia is one short ride, so a point-to-point ticket bought on Renfe's site costs less than any pass. Passes only help on a longer loop of Spanish cities. Is a Eurail Pass worth it?
  5. Pair it with Ávila, not Toledo, on the same tripÁvila's walls are about an hour away by bus and sit on the same high plateau. Toledo is better as its own day from Madrid.Ávila

Segovia FAQ

Is Segovia worth a day trip from Madrid?

Yes. The aqueduct, Alcázar and old town fit in a day, and the train takes about 30 minutes. It is smaller than Toledo, so it suits travelers who prefer one landmark and an easy lunch.

How do you get from Madrid to Segovia?

The high-speed train from Chamartín takes about 30 minutes to Guiomar station, then a city bus reaches the old town. A bus from Madrid is slower but drops you nearer the center.

How long do you need in Segovia?

Six or seven hours covers the aqueduct, the cathedral and a lunch. Stay a night if you want the quiet evening light on the walls and an unhurried dinner.

What is Segovia famous for eating?

Cochinillo asado, roast suckling pig, and also judiones, a bean stew from nearby La Granja. Most restaurants near the aqueduct serve both, and lunch is the main meal.

Segovia or Toledo: which is better?

Toledo is larger, with more museums and viewpoints, and takes a longer day. Segovia is easier and quieter. If you have one day, pick Toledo for art and layers of history, Segovia for one landmark and an easy lunch.
