Murcia Province sits in southeast Spain on the Mediterranean, with the regional capital, Murcia, inland. Its best-known feature is the Mar Menor, a large saltwater lagoon separated from the open sea by a long sandbar, so the water is usually calmer and shallower than on the outer coast. The Costa Cálida covers the rest of the shoreline, with resort towns and quieter beaches. Cartagena, a port with Roman and Carthaginian history, lies on the same coast and has a Roman theater you can visit.

Lorca and Caravaca de la Cruz are inland, reached by road, and suit a trip that mixes beach days with small hill towns. Lorca has a castle and an old town. Caravaca de la Cruz is known for its Holy Cross sanctuary. The region suits families who want shallow water and travelers who want a quieter part of Spain than its busiest resorts. Spring and early autumn are the most comfortable months for walking and swimming, since summer is hot. A car makes the inland towns much easier to reach.
