Almería is a coastal city in southeastern Spain and the capital of the province of the same name, in Andalusia. It sits on the Gulf of Almería, an inlet of the Mediterranean, with the Sierra de Gádor to the west and the Andarax river delta to the east. The old quarter climbs toward the Alcazaba, a medieval Muslim fortress begun in the 10th century, with triple walls, a keep and gardens.

The Catedral de la Encarnación was rebuilt in Renaissance style after the 1522 earthquake, and its fortress-like towers and walkways were built against pirate raids. Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park lies east of the city, a park of volcanic origin with fishing villages and protected beaches. The Tabernas Desert lies north, where many Spaghetti Western film sets remain as tourist attractions. Lawrence of Arabia (1962) was shot in the Almería area. Summers are hot, with typical highs near 30 °C in July and August, and winters are mild. Almería Airport lies about 8 km east of the city.

Almería in five

  1. Visit the Alcazaba earlyThe Moorish fortress above the old quarter has a walled garden and a view over the port. Go in the morning, wear a hat and check current hours before you set out.
  2. Drive to Cabo de Gata or book a tourThe park's coves, salt flats and villages are spread along a winding coast, and bus service is limited. Hire a car, or compare day tours if you would rather not drive.Andalucía travel guide
  3. Ask for the free tapaMany bars in Almería bring a small tapa with each drink at no extra cost, a local habit shared with Granada. Ask at the bar when you order, and move on after one round.Granada travel guide
  4. Plan around heat and shadeCabo de Gata has little shade, and summer midday is hot. Walk early, carry water and book parking-friendly times for the best coves in July and August.

Almería FAQ

Is Almería worth visiting?

Yes for sun, an uncrowded Alcazaba and the natural park next door. It has fewer headline monuments than Granada or Seville, so it suits road trips more than a city break.

How do you get to Cabo de Gata from Almería?

By car in about 40–60 minutes, or by a bus with limited timetables. Check the operator's page for the season, and note that a car makes the coves and viewpoints far easier.

Do you need a car in Almería?

Not for the city, which is walkable. For Cabo de Gata, the Tabernas desert and Mojácar, a car or a day tour is the practical choice.

When is the best time to visit Almería?

March to May and October to November for walking and warm beach days. July and August are very hot, and the coves are crowded at midday.

How many days do you need in Almería?

A day covers the Alcazaba, the old town and tapas. Three days let you add Cabo de Gata and the Tabernas desert at an easy pace.
