Morro Jable is a locality in the municipality of Pájara, on Fuerteventura in Spain's Canary Islands. It sits on the eastern Sotavento coast of the Jandía peninsula, about 54 km south of Pájara, the municipal capital. The name came from Norman conquerors in the 15th century. Morro is the headland at the foot of which the fishing village grew, and jable means sand. Tourism has driven most of the town's growth in recent decades. Hotels, restaurants, nightlife and shops line the main avenue, which runs into the neighboring resort of Solana Matorral.

The main beach, Morro Jable or del Matorral, has golden sand, calm, clear water and a length of 4,325 meters. Las Coloradas, about 230 meters long and south of the pier, has dark sand and boulders. Two companies run ferries from the harbor to Gran Canaria. For a wilder stretch of coast, Cofete lies further south on the peninsula.

Morro Jable in five

  1. Fly into Fuerteventura and plan the transferThe airport is at Puerto del Rosario, about 1 to 1.5 hours by road from Morro Jable. Book a transfer, a rental car or a long bus ride before you land, because the journey is not short.
  2. Visit Cofete in a suitable vehicleThe wild beach of Cofete is reached over a long, unpaved track from the south. Check the road condition and your rental agreement first, and bring water and sun protection, as there is no shade.
  3. Walk the long promenade, not the main roadA promenade follows the town's long beach, with cafes and shops along it. The resort area spreads over several kilometers, so choose a hotel near the part you plan to use.
  4. Respect the wind and the seaFuerteventura is windy, which suits windsurfing and kitesurfing but can make beach days breezy. Check flags and lifeguard signs before swimming, as the Atlantic can be rough.
  5. Plan one island trip, not daily drivesDistances on the island are long, and the road north to Corralejo takes over an hour. Pick one day trip, and choose a base that suits your main plan.Corralejo

Morro Jable FAQ

Is Morro Jable worth visiting?

Yes for long sandy beaches, steady sun and wild coast nearby. It is a resort town, so choose it for the beach and the coast, not for sightseeing or nightlife.

How far is Morro Jable from Fuerteventura airport?

About 1 to 1.5 hours by road, depending on traffic and the route. There are buses, taxis and rental cars, but check the timetable if you land late.

Can you swim at Morro Jable?

Yes, from the town beach, which is long and sandy. Check flags and lifeguard signs because Atlantic swell can be strong, and wind can make it feel cool.

When is the best time to visit Morro Jable?

October to May for mild winter sun, or May and June for warm weather. July and August are hot and windy, and some beaches fill with Spanish and European families.

Do you need a car in Morro Jable?

Not for the town, but yes if you want Cofete, Sotavento, Corralejo or flexible days. Taxis cost a lot over island distances, so a rental car is the usual choice for a week.
