Lanzarote

Lanzarote is a Canary Island of black lava fields, vineyards grown in volcanic ash and beach resorts, suited to sun, walking and a slower pace.

Lanzarote is the easternmost of the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago in the Atlantic off the coast of northwest Africa. Eruptions in the 1730s covered large parts of the island with black lava and cinder, and Timanfaya National Park shows that ground best. The island is small enough to cross by car in under an hour, so a stay can mix volcanic trails, vineyards and the coast.

César Manrique, the local artist and architect, designed several sights that sit within the volcanic terrain, including Jameos del Agua and the Mirador del Río. The vineyards of La Geria, near Yaiza, grow vines in pits dug into volcanic ash. Beach resorts line parts of the coast, and the climate is mild year-round, which suits beach stays and walks. Four or five days gives time for the national park, a few Manrique sites and the coast.

Lanzarote in five

  1. Book the timed Timanfaya ticket online firstPrivate cars cannot drive the Ruta de los Volcanes; a park bus runs it from Islote de Hilario. Tickets are €30, sold only online for a set date and time, and none are sold at the venue.Lanzarote in 5 days
  2. Rent a car; buses reach resorts, not the sightsBuses link Arrecife with the main resorts, but the lava fields, vineyards and Manrique sites need a car or a tour. Book a rental early for school-holiday weeks.Getting around Spain
  3. Choose your base by beach, not by the mapPuerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca, Costa Teguise and Famara feel very different, and the island is about an hour from end to end. Fix the base first.Where to stay in Lanzarote
  4. Pack for wind and strong sunTrade winds blow most of the year, which keeps the heat down and makes some beaches feel cooler than the forecast. Use sunscreen even on cloudy days, and expect occasional dusty calima days.
  5. Flying in from outside Europe? Plan for EES on arrivalDirect flights from the UK or other non-Schengen countries clear passport control and EES at Lanzarote airport, so leave a margin before a timed Timanfaya or ferry booking.EES explained

Lanzarote FAQ

How many days do you need in Lanzarote?

Four or five days covers Timanfaya, the Manrique sites, the La Geria vineyards and two or three beaches. Add a day for La Graciosa or Fuerteventura if you want a boat day.

Where is the best place to stay in Lanzarote?

Puerto del Carmen for a first visit and restaurants, Playa Blanca for calm and the Papagayo beaches, Costa Teguise for wind sports and Famara for surf. Pick the base that matches your beach plan.

Do you need a car in Lanzarote?

Yes for most trips. The main sights, vineyards and viewpoints are spread across the island, and buses mostly link resorts. If you stay in one resort, a few tours can replace a rental.

Is Lanzarote or Tenerife better?

Lanzarote is flatter, drier and easier to drive, with lava landscapes and calm resorts. Tenerife has Mount Teide, more variety and bigger resorts. Choose Lanzarote for a simple, sunny holiday.

When is the best time to visit Lanzarote?

March to May and October to November for warm weather and fewer crowds. Winter is mild and popular with sun-seekers, and July and August are hot, windy and busy.
