Playa Blanca is a resort town at the southern tip of Lanzarote, one of the Canary Islands, in the municipality of Yaiza. It is the island's newest and fastest-growing resort. The coast is one large bay split into three smaller ones, which keeps the beaches sheltered and good for swimming. Across the Bocaina strait lies Fuerteventura, and the harbour has ferries to that island.

The main draws are the beaches and the sun. The town gets sunshine on about 300 days a year, and rain falls on about 16 days a year, mostly from December to February. July and August are the windiest months. Day trips often head to the Papagayo coves, a protected national park reached by a bumpy dirt road or on foot via Las Coloradas, and to Montaña Roja, a dormant volcano with views over the town. Buses serve all parts of the island, and the airport is about 40 minutes away by car.

Playa Blanca in five

  1. Walk the promenade, then go east to PapagayoThe seafront path links the town to its marina. The Papagayo coves lie a short drive east; check for any entry or parking charge before you go.
  2. Hire a car for Timanfaya and the northPlaya Blanca is at the far southern tip. Timanfaya and the lava fields are easiest by car, and organized coach trips run from the resorts.Puerto del Carmen
  3. Take the ferry to Fuerteventura for a dayBoats cross to Corralejo in about 25–35 minutes. It works as a beach day or a dunes day, but check the timetable and bring your passport.
  4. Pack for wind, not just sunThe trade winds cool the coast and can whip the sea. Bring a light layer for evenings and check the wind forecast for boat trips and kite sessions.
  5. Stay in Playa Blanca for calm, not nightlifeEvenings here are low-key. If you want livelier bars and a longer beach strip, Puerto del Carmen is about 35–40 km away.Puerto del Carmen

Playa Blanca FAQ

Is Playa Blanca a good place to stay in Lanzarote?

Yes, for calm beach holidays and short drives to the southern coves. It is quieter than Puerto del Carmen and farther from the airport and the north. Hire a car if you plan to see Timanfaya.

How far is Playa Blanca from Lanzarote airport?

About 40 minutes by road, depending on traffic. Taxis and hire cars are the easiest options; buses run on the same road but less often.

Can you take a ferry from Playa Blanca to Fuerteventura?

Yes, boats run to Corralejo in about 25–35 minutes. It is an easy day out, but check the current timetable and booking rules on the operator's site before you plan around it.

What is the best time to visit Playa Blanca?

February to April and October to November give mild, sunny weather. Summer is hot and windy. Winter is warm for northern Europeans but not always beach-clear, so pack a layer.

Do I need a car in Playa Blanca?

Not for the town and the promenade. You need one, or a tour, for Timanfaya, the north and the quieter beaches. Taxis between resorts add up quickly on longer drives.
