Ibiza

Ibiza is famous for its nightclubs, but its pine hills, rocky coves and walled old town give you plenty to do beyond them.

Ibiza is a Spanish island in the Balearic Islands, in the Mediterranean off Spain's east coast. Its nightclubs and summer dance-music scene draw most of the attention, but the island also has pine-covered hills, rocky coves with clear water and farmland inland. In Ibiza Town, Dalt Vila is a walled old town on a hill and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Plan about four days: that covers the old town, a few coves and one day outside Ibiza Town. Most visitors come between late spring and early autumn, when the beaches are busiest and the clubs are open, and the shoulder months bring fewer crowds. Buses link the main towns, but a rental car makes quiet coves easier to reach. The ferry to Formentera makes a good day trip if you want a change of scene.

Ibiza FAQ

How many days do you need in Ibiza?

Four or five days covers Ibiza Town, two or three beaches and a sunset on the west coast. Add a day for Formentera, and a few more if you want to move between bases.

Where is the best place to stay in Ibiza for a first visit?

Ibiza Town suits a first trip without a car, with the old town, the port and the bus station close. Santa Eulària is better for families and calm, and Sant Antoni for sunsets and a budget.

Do you need a car in Ibiza?

Not if you stay in Ibiza Town, Playa d'en Bossa or Sant Antoni and use buses, taxis and boat shuttles. A car helps for the north and for quieter coves, but parking at popular beaches is tight in peak season.

When is the best time to go to Ibiza?

June and September for warm sea, open venues and fewer crowds than July and August. May is cheaper and quiet, and October has closing parties but cooler water. Many places close from November to March.

Is Ibiza only for clubbing?

No. The island also has a UNESCO-listed old town, pine-backed coves, hill villages and markets, and the north and east are quiet even in August. Choose the base, not the clubs, to set the mood.
