Ibiza Town (Eivissa in Catalan) is the capital of Ibiza, the island in Spain's Balearic Islands, on its southeast coast. The town has two parts. Dalt Vila, or Upper Town, is the walled hilltop old core, with the 14th-century cathedral of Santa Maria at the top of the hill. The other part is the newer Eixample ('Extension') district. Dalt Vila and its 16th-century walls have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since December 1999. Philip II had the walls rebuilt against Ottoman attacks and Barbary pirates.
The Puig des Molins Punic necropolis, on a hill near town, holds roughly 3,000 rock-cut tombs. The port sits in a natural bay and is the main sea entrance to the city and the island. Ibiza Airport lies about 6 km southwest of town, at Es Codolar. Summer is hot: July and August average about 26 °C, while winters average about 12 °C. Spring and autumn are milder shoulder seasons. A full day covers Dalt Vila and the harbor; add more for beaches and nights out.
Ibiza Town in five
- Walk up to Dalt Vila at golden hourThe UNESCO-listed old town climbs to the cathedral and walls, with views over the harbor. The cobbles are steep, so wear flat shoes. Check cathedral and museum hours for the season.
- Take the bus from the airportA public bus links the airport with the Ibiza Town bus station, and a taxi takes about 15 minutes outside peak traffic. For late arrivals, check the last bus before you rely on it.
- Book Formentera ferries from the portFast boats to La Savina leave from the port, and midday and evening sailings sell out in peak season. Buy a return with a margin before a flight.Formentera travel guide
- Pick club nights, not just clubsThe big venues sit on the edges of town and on the road to Playa d'en Bossa; the center is quiet before midnight. Book tickets and transport ahead in July and August.
- Plan beach time by bus or boatThe nearest sand is at Figueretas and Talamanca, and Ses Salines is a short bus ride. Cala Comte and the west coast need a bus, taxi or hire car.Ibiza travel guide

Is Ibiza Town worth visiting?
Yes. Dalt Vila is a UNESCO-listed old town with walls, a cathedral and harbor views, and the port is the island's main hub for ferries and evenings out. Many visitors only see it for a day, but a night adds a lot.
Where should you stay in Ibiza Town?
Dalt Vila for atmosphere and quiet evenings, La Marina for nightlife and ferries, Figueretas for a beach near town, and Talamanca for a calmer bay. All are within a short taxi ride of the port.
How far is Ibiza Town from the airport?
About 7 km. A taxi takes roughly 15 minutes outside peak traffic, and a public bus links the airport with the Ibiza Town bus station. Check the last bus if you land late.
Is Ibiza Town walkable?
The old town and the port are walkable, though Dalt Vila is steep. Beaches, clubs and most of the island need a bus, taxi or hire car, so consider where you will spend your evenings.
What is Dalt Vila?
The walled upper old town of Ibiza Town, listed by UNESCO. It has narrow lanes, a cathedral and viewpoints over the port. Go in the late afternoon for softer light and fewer day-trip groups.
