The Western Cape is a province in the southwest of South Africa, with Cape Town as its capital and largest city. Cape Town sits at the foot of Table Mountain, a flat-topped peak inside Table Mountain National Park, and it is the usual starting point. East of the city, the Cape Winelands around Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl hold wine estates in mountain valleys. Farther east, the Garden Route follows the coast through Mossel Bay, George, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay.
Plan a few days for the city, then add wine country and a drive along the Garden Route if time allows. Summer, from December to February, is the driest and warmest season. From June to November, southern right whales come close to the shore at Hermanus, so that is the window for whale watching. Cape Town also has Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was held as a political prisoner, and Cape Point at the southern tip of the peninsula.

- Book Table Mountain cable car times onlineBook a timed ticket online and keep a spare day, because wind and cloud can close the cable car on the day you planned to go.Tours and tickets
- Carry a card and keep valuables out of sightCards work in most shops and restaurants. Car break-ins happen, especially at trailheads and beaches, so leave bags, phones and laptops out of view.Money and costs
- Rent a car for the Winelands and Cape PointSouth Africa drives on the left. Public transport reaches few wine farms or Cape Point, so most day trips need a rental car or a tour.Getting around
- Pack a windproof layer for Cape PointThe south-easter, called the Cape Doctor, blows hard in summer and can make Cape Point and the Atlantic beaches cold even on warm days.

Is Cape Town safe for tourists?
Most visits pass without trouble if you take normal care. Petty theft and car break-ins are the usual problems, so keep phones out of sight in the street and use a booked ride instead of walking after dark.
When is the best time to visit the Western Cape?
March to April and October to November bring dry, mild weather for the coast and the wine farms. Whales come to Hermanus from about July to November, but the winter months are wetter and colder.
Can you visit the Western Cape without a car?
Yes for Cape Town itself, which has MyCiTi buses, ride-hailing and tour minibuses. Cape Point, the Winelands and most Garden Route towns are hard to reach without a car or a guided tour.
How many days do you need in the Western Cape?
Four or five days cover Cape Town with a Cape Point and Winelands day trip. Add three or four days for the Garden Route, where the towns are far apart.
Is Cape Town worth visiting?
Yes for mountains, beaches, wine and food within a short drive of the city. It suits people who like walking, outdoor days and driving, and it is a poor match for a quiet city break with no car.
