Stellenbosch is a university town in the Western Cape of South Africa, about an hour's drive east of Cape Town. Its center is a grid of oak-lined streets with whitewashed Cape Dutch buildings and Victorian houses. The town is a base in the Cape Winelands, one of the country's main wine regions. Stellenbosch University, founded in 1866, brings a large student population and a mix of cafes, bookshops and galleries.
People come for the wine estates, many a short drive from town, and for the mountain views over the valleys. The old center is walkable, with museums and restaurants close together. Stellenbosch suits a short break from Cape Town, a two- or three-night stay for tastings and long meals, or a full day trip. Autumn, from March to May, and spring, from September to November, have mild weather. The summer months are the hottest and driest. Plan at least two full days to visit a few estates and walk the town without rushing.
Stellenbosch in five
- Rent a car for the wine farmsMost wine estates sit outside town on rural roads, and few are on a public bus route. Book a car, a driver or a tour before you arrive, especially for weekend visits.Getting around
- Set up an eSIM and save offline mapsSignal drops on the farm valley roads, so download offline maps before you leave Cape Town. An eSIM bought before you fly avoids a queue at the airport.Phones and eSIM
- Carry a card and some rand for small shopsMost restaurants and tasting rooms take cards, but farm stalls and some small shops may not. Keep rand (ZAR) notes and coins for tips, parking attendants and small purchases.Money and costs
- Book estate tastings and lunches aheadMany estates on the Stellenbosch wine routes take reservations for tastings and lunch, and weekend slots go first. Book the two or three estates you most want to see rather than walking in.Tours and tickets
- Declare fresh food and plants at arrivalFruit, plant material and meat brought from abroad must be declared on arrival. Check what is restricted before you pack snacks from home.Visas and entry

Is Stellenbosch worth visiting?
Yes, if you want wine estates, a walkable university town and a base for the Winelands. It is a poor choice if you want beaches or late-night clubs.
How far is Stellenbosch from Cape Town?
About 50 km east of Cape Town by road. Most visitors drive, and the trip usually takes around an hour in traffic.

Yes for the town itself, which is compact and walkable. Most wine estates are outside town, so book a tour, a driver or a taxi for them.
How many days do you need in Stellenbosch?
Two or three days covers the town and a few estates. A day trip from Cape Town works for one or two tastings.
When is the best time to visit Stellenbosch?
March to May and September to November suit the wine farms and mild weather. Summer is hot and busier, and the winter months are wetter and cooler.
