Plettenberg Bay

Plettenberg Bay

Go for the beaches, Robberg Nature Reserve walks and whale watching. It also works as a stop on a Garden Route road trip.

Plettenberg Bay is a seaside town on South Africa's Garden Route in the Western Cape, between Knysna to the west and the Tsitsikamma coast to the east. Long sandy beaches face the Indian Ocean, and the sheltered bay suits swimming and paddling. The main walk is Robberg Nature Reserve, a rocky peninsula with coastal trails and a Cape fur seal colony at its tip. Southern right whales come into the bay in winter and spring.

Go for beach days, coastal walks, whale watching and a stop on a Garden Route road trip. Summer, from December to February, is the warm season for swimming, and June to November is whale season. The town centre is small enough to walk, but most beaches and trails sit outside it, so plan on a car. Two or three nights cover the town and Robberg. Add nights if you are driving the wider route.
