Hermitage Garden

Plan a visit to Hermitage Garden in central Moscow for shaded paths, a lake and three theatres with concerts, plays and opera performances.

Hermitage Garden is a compact park on Karetnyy Ryad in central Moscow, with shaded paths, flowerbeds, fountains and benches. Its three theatres, including New Opera, bring concerts, plays and opera to the garden, while festivals add food, crafts and live entertainment, especially in summer. You can take a walk around the lake, rent a boat or let children use the playground. The garden is a good stop for a quiet break between city sights, though events can draw larger crowds.

Hermitage Garden

Hermitage Garden became a place for public entertainment, with theatres, cafés and summer pavilions. The site was taken over by merchant Ya. V. Shchukin in 1894, and the garden opened that year. It later became known for performances as well as its paths and green spaces.

Russian opera singers Fyodor Chaliapin, Leonid Sobinov and Antonina Nezhdanova performed on the garden’s stage. Composer Sergei Rachmaninoff also conducted an orchestra there.

Theatres and outdoor events

Three theatres are located in the garden: New Opera, Sphere and Hermitage. Their programme includes opera, plays, concerts and other performances. The garden also hosts festivals, including events focused on food and crafts, and concerts are especially frequent in summer.

Outdoor entertainment can include dance evenings and live music. If you want a quieter walk, check whether an event is taking place before you go; festivals can bring a larger crowd.

Paths, lake and family facilities

The garden’s paths pass flowerbeds, fountains, shaded areas and benches. A walking route circles the lake, where boats are available to rent. Families can use the playground, and the grounds also include facilities for sports such as tennis, basketball and volleyball.

The garden is on Karetnyy Ryad in Moscow’s Tverskoy district. Its compact size makes it a straightforward place to pause for a walk or spend time outdoors between visits elsewhere in the city.
