Gorky's House

Visit Gorky’s House in Moscow, an Art Nouveau mansion by Fyodor Shekhtel, with stained glass, sculpted doorways and a chapel on the third floor.

Gorky’s House, at Malaya Nikitskaya Ulitsa 6/2 in Moscow, is an Art Nouveau mansion designed by Fyodor Shekhtel for entrepreneur Stepan Ryabushinsky. Maxim Gorky lived here later, and the house is now a museum. Look for the stained-glass windows, sculpted doorways, ceiling murals and carved stone staircase, then visit the small chapel on the third floor. Printed information in several languages helps explain the rooms, the building and Gorky’s life. The house is a rewarding stop for architecture and Russian literature, even if you have not read Gorky.

The Ryabushinsky mansion

Gorky's House
Gorky's House

The building on Malaya Nikitskaya Ulitsa was designed by Fyodor Shekhtel for entrepreneur Stepan Ryabushinsky. Completed in 1906, it is an example of Russian Art Nouveau. Its details reward a slow look: sculpted doorways, stained-glass windows, ceiling murals and a carved stone staircase that curves through the interior.

The mansion is also known as Ryabushinsky’s House, after its original owner. Maxim Gorky lived here later, and the building is now a museum dedicated to the writer and the house. Its history connects the architecture with two very different residents: Ryabushinsky, who commissioned the mansion, and Gorky, whose name the museum carries.

The staircase is one of the interior’s defining features, with carved stone rising in a twisting, wave-like form. Stained glass and sculpted architectural details appear throughout the house, alongside ceiling murals. The rooms also contain Gorky’s personal belongings, including Japanese china and books from his library.

Printed explanatory papers in several languages provide context for the rooms and Gorky’s life. The small chapel on the third floor is another detail to seek out during your visit. You can explore without arranging a guided tour in advance.
