Alexander Garden

Walk beside the Kremlin wall in Alexander Garden, Moscow, for tower views, seasonal flower beds and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Alexander Garden is a public park along the Kremlin’s western wall in central Moscow, close to Red Square. Its paths pass flower beds, fountains, statues and historic memorials, with views of the Kremlin towers that do not require a Kremlin ticket. Stop at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to see its eternal flame and the changing of the guard, or pause by the fountains and planted gardens. The park is an easy place for a short walk between central sights.

Alexander Garden

Alexander Garden runs beside the Kremlin’s western wall, close to Red Square. Its three sections, the Upper, Middle and Lower Gardens, make a green route through central Moscow. Paths and benches offer places to pause among flower beds, trees, fountains and monuments.

The gardens were designed by architect Osip Bove and opened in the 19th century. They were laid out where the Neglinnaya River once ran; the river now flows through a pipe beneath the gardens. The Kremlin wall and towers remain in view along much of the walk.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is one of the garden’s central memorials. An eternal flame burns at the site, which honours fallen soldiers. The changing of the guard takes place every hour. Visitors can watch from the garden; approach the memorial with respect and leave room for the ceremony.

Nearby, look for plaques commemorating cities that received the title of Hero City. Other landmarks along the paths include the Arc de Triomphe and fountains decorated with sculptures, including horses. The garden’s flower beds shift in colour with the seasons, adding another reason to notice the planting as you walk.
