Rincón is a beach town and municipality on the western coast of Puerto Rico's main island, at the westernmost tip of the island. Its name means 'corner'. The town is the center of the island's surf scene, and surfers come from around the world. Domes Beach, where the 1968 World Surfing Championship was held, is a main break. Maria's, Tres Palmas and Sandy Beach are other surf spots nearby.
Sunsets draw many people, and the town is often called the city of beautiful sunsets. The Punta Higuero lighthouse, known locally as El Faro, is one of its emblems. Steps Beach has a natural reserve with corals, and Tres Palmas lies within a marine reserve, so snorkeling and scuba diving are part of a trip here. Rincón Pueblo, the downtown area, has the main square and a large Catholic church. Surfing is possible all year, but the best surf runs from November through March. Summer storms can also bring large surf. Check flood and hurricane risk on the coast before you travel; Hurricane Maria damaged about 400 homes here in September 2017.

- Choose winter for waves, summer for calm waterDiscover Puerto Rico puts the most consistent surf between October and April and calls summer gentler. At Tres Palmas, winter waves can reach 20 feet, so snorkeling is not recommended then.Best time to visit Rincón
- Rent a car for the beachesThe tourism board says a car is the easiest way around Rincón because beaches, restaurants and sights are spread out and public transportation is limited. Reserve one before you land.Renting a car abroad
- Watch sunset at the Punta Higüera lighthouseBuilt in 1892 and still operating, the lighthouse sits in a park with telescopes. Winter visitors sometimes spot humpback whales from here, according to Discover Puerto Rico.
- Plan around Thursday's Art WalkEvery Thursday evening the town square fills with handcrafts, food trucks and music, per the tourism board. It is the easiest non-beach evening in town.Rincón in 3 days

Rincón FAQ
Is Rincón good for beginner surfers?
Yes in the calmer months. Discover Puerto Rico names Jobos in Isabela, Surfer's Beach in Aguadilla and La Pared in Luquillo as beginner spots, and says summer's gentler swells suit learners. In winter, book a lesson and skip Domes, María's and Tres Palmas.
When is whale season in Rincón?
The tourism board links whale watching at Domes and the lighthouse park to winter and says humpbacks sometimes come within 100 yards of shore. It gives no exact dates, so treat sightings as a bonus, not a promise.
Do you need a car in Rincón?
Yes for most trips. Discover Puerto Rico calls a car the easiest way to get around because beaches and restaurants are spread out and public transportation is limited. Walkers can stay near the town square for dinner.
How far is Rincón from San Juan?
The west region is 2 to 2.5 hours from San Juan's airport by road and 45 minutes to 1 hour from Aguadilla's, per Discover Puerto Rico. Flying into Aguadilla saves the drive if fares and schedules suit.
What is there to do in Rincón besides surf?
Snorkel at Tres Palmas in calm months, watch sunsets at the lighthouse park, browse galleries and join the Thursday Art Walk. Corcega and Balneario de Rincón are listed as family-friendly swimming beaches.
