Ponce is Puerto Rico's second-largest city, on the south coast and far from San Juan on the north. Its historic center grew around Plaza Las Delicias, where the cathedral and the red-and-black Parque de Bombas firehouse stand close together. The city is known for Ponce Creole architecture: two-story townhouses with wooden balconies, ornate trim and bright paint. The old center is compact enough to walk.
Ponce suits travelers who want museums, old streets and a slower pace than San Juan. Give it at least two full days, plus time for a trip into the hills to a restored coffee hacienda or a boat to Caja de Muertos, an island off the coast. The best season is winter and spring, from December to April, when it is drier than in summer and hurricane season, which runs June to November, is over. Plan at least a few nights here.
Ponce in five
- Start at Plaza Las DeliciasThe town square holds the cathedral, the Fountain of Lions and the Parque de Bombas, with cafés and restaurants around it, per Discover Puerto Rico. It is the walkable core of the city.
- Check the Museo de Arte de Ponce firstThe museum's own site says it is temporarily closed as reconstruction begins, with its Saturdays at the Museum season running at Plaza del Caribe. Call 787-840-1510 for updates.Museum notice
- Reserve Hacienda Buena Vista aheadThe restored coffee plantation pairs local history with coffee tasting, and the tourism board says tours need reservations. Allow a separate half day outside the center.
- Book a boat to Caja de MuertosThe reserve island sits eight miles off the coast with beaches, trails, a lighthouse and a cave. Arrange a private boat in advance and bring food and drinks, since there is no fresh water or dining.
- Use Mercedita airport or the roadDiscover Puerto Rico lists Mercedita International (AIM) with a handful of domestic flights a day, and the cruise port sits about ten minutes from downtown. Otherwise drive across the island from San Juan.Renting a car abroad

Read the guidePonce FAQ
Is Ponce worth visiting?
Yes for architecture, plaza life and day trips to Caja de Muertos or a coffee hacienda. Check the Museo de Arte de Ponce first, because it is temporarily closed while its reconstruction phase begins.
Is the Museo de Arte de Ponce open?
Its own website says it is temporarily closed as reconstruction begins, and that Saturdays at the Museum continues at Plaza del Caribe. Call 787-840-1510 or check the site for updates.
How many days do you need in Ponce?
One full day covers the plaza, a museum-district walk and dinner; two days add Hacienda Buena Vista or a boat to Caja de Muertos. Longer stays suit road trippers touring the south coast.
How do you get to Caja de Muertos?
By private boat booked ahead from the Ponce coast, since the island is eight miles offshore. Discover Puerto Rico says to bring food and drinks because it has no fresh water or dining.
Is Ponce a good day trip from San Juan?
It is possible by car, but the drive crosses the island and leaves little time for the plaza. An overnight in Ponce gives a calmer pace and access to the haciendas.
