Tavira is a town and municipality on Portugal's south coast, in the east of the Algarve, about 28 km east of Faro. The Gilão meets the Atlantic here, and a bridge spans the river to join the two halves of town. Moorish rule, which ran from the 8th to the 13th centuries, shaped the old quarter with whitewashed walls, Moorish-style doors and characteristic rooftops, plus a castle and two mosques from that period. The 1755 earthquake flattened most of the Algarve's buildings, so the town was rebuilt, and it now has 18th-century buildings and about 37 churches.
The beach lies beyond the salt pans and is reached by the Santa Luzia footbridge or by ferry. That ferry also crosses to Ilha de Tavira, a sandbar island inside the Ria Formosa wetlands park. Tavira has its own railway station on the line to Faro and Lagos, but trains to Lisbon connect at Faro, and Faro and Seville are the nearest international airports. Summers are hot and dry, winters are mild and wet, and the town gets around 3,150 hours of sunshine a year.
Tavira in five
- Plan the island beach around the boat timesIlha de Tavira is a barrier island reached by boat from the town side. Check the operator's times for your date so you do not miss the last boat back.
- Use the Algarve train line, not a car, for FaroTavira has a CP station on the Algarve line, so Faro and the airport side are reachable without a car. Check the CP timetable for your day before you plan a late return.Trains in Portugal
- Spend the cool hours in town and the heat at the beachFrom June to September the old town is hot at midday, so walk the bridge, the castle gardens and the churches early or late and keep the middle of the day for the island or a long lunch.
- Count Spain in your Schengen daysSeville is a long day by car over the Spanish border, and Spain and Portugal sit in the same Schengen area, so one 90-day count covers both. Read the rule before you stack Andalusia onto a long Algarve stay.Schengen 90/180 rule
- Compare Tavira with Faro or Lagos before you bookTavira is calmer and more historic than Albufeira, while Faro is better for flights and Lagos for western coves. Pick Tavira if river evenings matter more than nightlife.Faro travel guide

Read the guideTavira FAQ
Is Tavira worth visiting?
Yes, if you prefer a quiet river town with churches, an old stone bridge and an island beach to a resort. It has less nightlife and fewer big hotels than Albufeira, which is the point for many visitors.
How do you get to the beach at Tavira?
The main beach is on Ilha de Tavira, reached by a short boat ride from the town side. Check the operator's schedule for your date, because times change by season and the last boat back is firm.
Can you visit Tavira from Faro without a car?
Yes. Tavira has a CP station on the Algarve line, so a day trip from Faro works by train. Check the timetable for your date, and plan a taxi or bus between the airport and the Faro station.
Is Tavira better than Albufeira?
It depends on the trip. Tavira suits a calm base with history and an island beach, while Albufeira suits nightlife, big hotels and a long beach strip. Many travelers pick one for the first half and one for the second.
When is the best time to visit Tavira?
May, June and September combine warm weather and fewer crowds than July and August. The island beach is at its busiest in high summer, so go early in the day if you travel then.
