Silves is a historic city and municipality in the Algarve, southern Portugal, on a hill above the Arade River. It was the former capital of the Kingdom of the Algarve and is considered one of the oldest cities in Portugal. The castle has red sandstone walls and buildings from the 8th century, and excavations found Iron Age remains beneath them. The cathedral nearby ranks among the best Gothic churches in the south of the country.

The main sights are the castle, the cathedral, the Roman Bridge over the Arade and the archaeological museum just below the castle. Silves is also known for its orange groves, a fruit the Moors introduced, and the town belongs to the Cittaslow network of slow-living towns. The sea is about 15 km away. The town is about 62 km by road from Faro International Airport, and the A22 motorway and a railway station on the Algarve line provide access. Visit in spring or autumn, since summer days reach about 30 to 31 °C (86 to 88 °F).

Silves in five

  1. Buy the castle and museum combined ticketThe council lists the castle at 2.80 euros and a combined castle and Museu Municipal de Arqueologia ticket at 3.90 euros. Half price applies for children, students, young card holders and over 65s.
  2. Time the castle for the cooler hoursFrom January to April and October to December the castle opens 9:00 to 18:00, and in summer 9:00 to 20:00, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. It is shut on 25 December and 1 January only.
  3. Do not plan the museum for a MondayThe archaeology museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00, with last entry at 17:30, and closes on 25 December and 1 January. Keep Monday for the castle, which opens daily.
  4. Base on the coast and drive in for a half daySilves sits inland on the river, so beach stays at Portimão or Carvoeiro are easier. A morning at the castle plus lunch in town fits well before an afternoon on the sand.Portimão travel guide
  5. Pair it with Monchique for a cooler dayThe Serra de Monchique rises north of Silves and is noticeably cooler in summer, so the two combine into one loop by car.Monchique travel guide

Silves FAQ

How much is the Silves castle?

The council lists 2.80 euros, or 3.90 euros combined with the archaeology museum, with half price for children, students, young card holders and over 65s. Tickets are bought at the castle, with no online sale mentioned.

Is Silves worth visiting?

Yes for the castle, the cathedral and the quiet streets, especially on a hot day or a rainy one. It is a half-day stop rather than a base, because the beaches are a drive away.

How long do you need in Silves?

Two to three hours for the castle and old town, or half a day with the museum and a long lunch. Add the cathedral if it is open when you arrive, and allow time for the steep climb.

What are the Silves castle opening hours?

9:00 to 18:00 in the winter months (January to April, October to December) and 9:00 to 20:00 in summer, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. It is open every day except 25 December and 1 January.

Can you visit Silves without a car?

Yes, by Algarve line train with a taxi or a walk up to the old town, or by bus from Portimão. A car makes it easier to combine Silves with Monchique in one day.
