Portimão is a parish in the municipality of Portimão, on the Arade river in the Algarve, Portugal's southern region. Travelers come for the beaches, above all Praia da Rocha, a long sandy beach with cliffs and a promenade a short way from the center. The historic center is small enough to cover on foot.
The town's churches, convents and fort are the main sites to see on foot: the Santa Catarina Fort, the Misericórdia Church, the Nossa Senhora da Conceição Church, the Colégio dos Jesuítas Convent and the São Francisco Convent. Each can be seen in a short visit, so the town suits a short trip. Silves and Monchique are the usual day trips inland. Late spring and early autumn are milder than the hot summer months, when the beaches are busiest. Plan two or three days for a trip that mixes town and beach.
Portimão in five
- Use the train for the city, not for the beachThe Algarve line stops in the city, so Lagos and Faro are easy by rail, but Praia da Rocha needs a bus, taxi or a longer walk from the station.
- Visit the Museu de Portimão on the right dayThe museum is closed on Mondays and national holidays, opens Tuesday afternoons only from September to July, and costs 3 euros. In August it opens in the evening instead.
- Pick Praia da Rocha for sand, the city for valuePraia da Rocha puts you on a wide beach with resort hotels and bars. The riverfront city has a calmer, more local feel, restaurants, a market and the train station.
- Reach Carvoeiro by road, not by trainThe cove town and the cave boats are west along the coast and off the rail line, so go by car, taxi or bus from the city. Choose a licensed boat operator and keep a spare day for the sea.Carvoeiro travel guide
- Pair the city with Silves and MonchiqueSilves has the castle and old Moorish quarter, and Monchique has hill air and Fóia. Both make a day trip from Portimão by car.Silves travel guide

Is Portimão worth visiting?
Yes if you want a working Algarve city with a big beach, a good museum and train links, less so if you want a quiet fishing village. Praia da Rocha is lively in summer and calm in spring and autumn.
Is Portimão or Lagos better?
Lagos is more atmospheric, with a walled old town and nearby coves, while Portimão has more city services, a wider beach and cheaper rooms in the center. Both sit on the Algarve rail line.
How do you get from Portimão to Praia da Rocha?
By bus, taxi or a long walk from the center. The train station is in the city, not at the beach, so allow extra time with luggage and consider a hotel near the sand if you arrive by rail.
Is the Museu de Portimão worth it?
Yes for a rainy day or an evening in August, when it opens late. It covers the canning industry and local history for 3 euros, with a 4 euro combined ticket with the Alcalar site.
Does Portimão have a tourist tax?
This guide has not verified whether Portimão charges a municipal tourist tax, so ask your accommodation before you pay. Neighboring towns such as Albufeira and Faro publish their own rules, so do not assume the same applies here.
