Óbidos is a town and municipality in the Oeste region of Portugal, in the historical province of Estremadura and the Leiria district. The town itself has about 3,100 inhabitants. It sits on a hilltop encircled by a fortified wall, a well-preserved example of medieval architecture. The municipality covers about 141.55 square kilometers and reaches the Atlantic coast.
Visitors come for the walls and castle, which now houses a pousada, so you can sleep inside the medieval fortifications. The town is informally called Vila das Rainhas, or town of the queens. Queens of Portugal often favored it after it was given to Queen Urraca in 1210. UNESCO recognized Óbidos as a City of Literature in 2015. Each July, the Medieval Market recreates medieval Europe in the castle and town for two weeks. The International Chocolate Festival takes place in early March. Plan a few hours for the walls and town, or a night to stay inside them.
Óbidos in five
- Arrive early or stay for the eveningThe walled center is small, and day groups gather in the main street around midday. Early morning or evening gives you the lanes with room to look, which is the case for sleeping inside the walls.
- Treat the wall walk with careThe wall walk gives views over roofs and fields, but stretches are narrow and high. Check the conditions at the gate before you go, and skip it in wet weather or with small children.
- Plan parking outside the wallsExpect to leave your car outside the gate and walk in. If you sleep inside the walls, ask your lodging about luggage access and parking before you arrive.
- Add Tomar or the coast on a longer routeÓbidos sits on the corridor between Lisbon and Coimbra, so it pairs with the Convent of Christ at Tomar. A car makes the route easy; buses and trains need more planning.Tomar travel guide

Is Óbidos worth visiting?
Yes, as a short stop. The walls, lanes and castle can be seen in a few hours, so it fits a Lisbon to Porto drive. It is less rewarding if you expect a long list of sights.
Can you visit Óbidos as a day trip from Lisbon?
Yes, by car or bus. The town is small, so pair it with a coast stop or Tomar if you want a full day, or stay a night for the quiet evening.
How long do you need in Óbidos?
Two to three hours cover the main street, the castle area and a wall section. Add time for a meal and a slow look at the side lanes, or stay overnight.
Is it worth staying overnight in Óbidos?
Yes if you want the lanes without day groups. Inside the walls you trade easy parking for atmosphere, so ask your lodging about luggage and access before you book.
When is the best time to visit Óbidos?
Spring and autumn give mild weather and thinner crowds than July and August. Weekends and event dates are busier, so check the municipal calendar before fixing a day.
