Sopot is a seaside resort on the Polish Baltic coast, between Gdańsk and Gdynia. Sopot has drawn holidaymakers since the 19th century, and it is best known for its wooden pier, which runs about 511.5 m into the sea, and for about 4.5 km of sand beaches. Monte Cassino Street, known locally as Monciak, is the pedestrian street that runs from the railway station to the sea, lined with cafés, shops and restaurants. Local trains link Sopot with Gdańsk and Gdynia, which together form the Tricity.

Plan two to three days to cover the pier, the beaches, the town centre and a day trip to Gdańsk's Old Town. Stay in Sopot if you want to walk to the sea in the evening. Stay in Gdańsk if you want its historic centre on your doorstep, and take the train to Sopot for the beach. Summer, June to August, is the season for swimming. Sopot also hosts an international song festival in summer.

Sopot FAQ

Is Sopot worth visiting?

Yes for a resort stop of a day or two, when the pier, the sand and the Monciak promenade are the point, mainly from June to August. It has few sights of its own, so pair it with Gdańsk for history.

Is the Sopot pier free?

Not in the paid season. The 2026 tariff charged 10 zł for adults and 5 zł for children aged 3 to 16 from 10 April to 30 September, and under-3s entered free. Check the MOSiR tariff for your dates.

When can you swim in Sopot?

In summer, at guarded areas: most ran from 27 June to 30 August in 2026, with one opening from 13 June. The Baltic is cool even then, and swimming within 100 m of the pier is banned.

Should you stay in Sopot or Gdańsk?

Stay in Sopot for beach days and evenings on Monciak; stay in Gdańsk for history and shipyard sights. SKM local trains link the two, so a day trip works from either.

Sopot or Masuria for a summer holiday?

Sopot is for sand, a pier and city evenings; the Great Masurian Lakes are for sailing, forest and quiet. Pick the sea for a short break and the lakes for a week on the water.
