Gdańsk is a port city on the Baltic coast of northern Poland, in the Pomeranian region. Its historic Main Town was largely destroyed in the Second World War and rebuilt, so the merchant houses and church towers along the Long Embankment and the Motława River look much as they did when the city was a member of the Hanseatic League, the medieval trading network of Baltic and North Sea towns. Visitors come for that old center, for the former Lenin Shipyard, where the Solidarity movement began in 1980, and for the beaches of Sopot, a short train ride away.

A three-day stay covers the main sights: one day for the Main Town and the Solidarity sites, one for the beaches and promenade in Sopot, and one for Malbork Castle, the Teutonic Order fortress about an hour away by train. June to August is the main season for swimming in the Baltic.
