Palestinian Territories

Bethlehem, Hebron, Nablus, Ramallah and Jericho sit in the West Bank, where desert valleys, historic sites and Palestinian food meet tight access rules. Check those rules before you plan a route.

Palestine is a country in the Southern Levant, made up of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. The two areas are not connected, because Israel lies between them. The towns covered here are in the West Bank: Bethlehem, Hebron, Nablus, Ramallah and Jericho. Ramallah is the de facto administrative center, about 10 km from central East Jerusalem. Jerusalem is the proclaimed capital, but Israel controls the city.

Visitors come for history, religious sites, desert scenery and Palestinian food. Wadi Qelt, a desert valley near Jericho, has varied plants and animals and the Monastery of St George. Musakhan, roast chicken with sumac and onions on bread, is the national dish. Summers are hot and dry, winters cool and rainy, and highland areas are cooler than the coast. Most visitors in 2010 stayed only a few hours or joined a day trip, so allow more than one day. More than 99% of Area C is off-limits to Palestinians, so check access rules before planning any route. Check current conditions before any trip to Gaza, where the war since October 2023 has caused widespread destruction.

Five things to know before Palestinian Territories

  1. Read the current travel advisory first

Governments including the UK and US advise against all travel to all or large parts of the Palestinian Territories. Most travel insurance will not cover you where your government advises against travel. UK travel advice

  2. Know that Israel controls entry

Visitors enter through Israel, which needs an ETA-IL for visa-exempt passports, or from Jordan over the Allenby Bridge, which passes Israeli checkpoints. There is no separate visa. Visas and entry

  3. Check which areas the warnings cover

The UK advises against all travel to Gaza and the northern West Bank governorates, and against all but essential travel to most of the rest, with some exceptions such as Bethlehem.

  4. Carry your passport and entry card at checkpoints

Israeli checkpoints control movement between the West Bank and Israel and between towns. Carry your passport and entry card and allow extra time.

  5. Check what your insurer will cover in writing

Standard policies usually exclude areas under travel warnings. If you must travel, get written confirmation of medical and evacuation cover. Travel insurance
