Lahore is Punjab's provincial capital and Pakistan's second-largest city after Karachi. The city sits on the Ravi River, near the Indian border at Wagah. It is a cultural and educational center, a publishing hub, and the home of Punjabi cinema and Qawwali music. Most of the historic core is in the Walled City, where UNESCO-listed sites stand among working bazaars.

The main draws are Mughal-era monuments. The Lahore Fort and the Shalimar Gardens are both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and the Badshahi Mosque, finished in 1673, was once the biggest mosque on earth. Two to three days covers the Walled City and the main monuments at an easy pace. Summer is very hot, with June often above 45 °C (113 °F), and monsoon floods are possible from late June through September. A World Air Quality Report 2024 ranked Lahore among the world's most polluted cities, so February, March, October and November are the best months to go.
